Without a basic understanding of the legal issues involved in higher education, community college administrators and staff are operating at a disadvantage when it comes to dealing with many of the challenges at their institutions. There are new concerns in the law of higher education:  new security concerns post-Virginia Tech, new interpretations of FERPA, new issues of financial aid/availability, student mental health issues, and governing boards/trustees/governance.

Not intended for college legal counsel specifically, this seminar seeks to give administrators, faculty leadership, governing board members, student life officials, public and media relations, security officers, and HR personnel a working knowledge of the issues of the day.

You will be introduced to the current legal issues facing community colleges, including: safety and security on campus; liability and risk management; emergency planning; human resources topics in hiring, promoting and firing employees; sexual harassment; academic freedom and first amendment rights. You'll also have an opportunity to submit questions to Mr. Black and get answers specific to your campus.
