Returning Veterans: Implications for Higher Education

Video Online Seminar • Tuesday, July 15, 2008 • 12:00 - 1:30 PM CDT • $394

Talk of a reinvigorated GI Bill in Washington and debates about whether the United States should bring its troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan point to a new wave of veterans enrolling in college. But is America's post-secondary education system prepared to serve them effectively? This live, online video seminar will look at the impact returning troops will have on higher education and what campuses can do to help veterans succeed both academically and personally.

Some college faculty and staff members who have been around for a while have had the experience of working with veterans of earlier conflicts, but veterans returning from war today are different from their predecessors. This seminar examines differences and changes in mortality, injury, and survival rates for veterans of the current military actions; the economic and political climates to which they are returning; and some of the characteristics that can be expected of the soldiers themselves.

Most importantly, the seminar will include recommendations on how colleges and universities – especially community, technical, and other two-year and open-enrollment institutions – can improve how they serve veterans in their:
• Lobbying
• Disability services
• Veterans’ services
• Incident response mechanisms (Behavioral Intervention Teams, etc.)
• Mental health services
• Technology
• Faculty/staff training
• Housing

• Gather staff and administrators to discuss this key issue
