College faculty and administrators are familiar with the occasional student who needs to miss class, or an exam, to recover from the flu or an accident.
But what about the student who isn’t going to “recover?”
Increasing numbers of students on college campuses struggle daily with “invisible” chronic illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, depression, anxiety and diabetes. Some have more acute difficulties, including HIV, cancer or heart disease.
These students may appear fine, but chronic disease limits their ability to attend and participate fully in class. These students may also be easily exhausted, prone to sudden emergencies, and frequently absent due to their condition or the doctor visits it requires.
The ongoing health needs of these students pose a considerable challenge to higher education, both in the classroom and beyond.
In Chronic Illness: 5 Things to Know, 5 Things to Do, Patricia Fennell, MSW, LCSW-R will share her extensive experience dealing with chronic illness patients to improve service delivery to students on your campus.
Participants in this seminar will learn:
• The four phases of chronic illness
• The impact of chronic illness on academic and socio-emotional functioning
• The importance of developing and implementing service plans for dealing with chronic illness
• Cross-campus coordination of policies on privacy, notification and reasonable accommodations
• How faculty and student services can better accommodate students with a disability
• Legal requirements of Title III of the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
• The limitations on duty of the higher-education institution
Participants will also receive specific tools and strategies to improve service provisions, including document templates for communicating about chronic illnesses with students, families, faculty members and student services.
