Colleges and universities can be unintentional breeding grounds for gambling addictions, especially as opportunities to gamble have multiplied nationwide with the expansion of lotteries, casinos and Internet gaming.
Like alcohol consumption, gambling is a risk-laden behavior that affects a large number of students. According to LaBrie, Shaffer, & LaPlante (2003), nearly half of college students gambled during the past year.
Like alcohol, gambling is widely available on campus. Gambling today takes many forms, including the lottery and scratch tickets, casino games, poker games, online gaming, and sports wagers.
Like alcohol addiction, gambling addiction can be recognized by trained individuals; can be treated; and can wreak great destruction if left untreated.
This seminar offers a comprehensive look at how to spot gambling addiction, and outlines important steps universities can take to address the problem in terms of referral, treatment and prevention programming.
Over 90 minutes, our knowledgeable presenters will:
• Provide you with a clear understanding of how students become addicted to gambling and review the various forms of gambling that can occur.
• Use theory and case studies to help you learn to identify student risk for gambling addiction.
• Offer practical advice on student intervention and referral for help with gambling addiction.
• Provide a brief overview of the common approaches to treatment.
• Explore how seemingly benign campus activities may actually increase risk.
• Reinforce the importance of addressing gambling through training, policies and codes of conduct.
• Share sample gambling policies instituted by other colleges and universities and discuss key considerations for developing your own policy.

Dr. Brian Van Brunt has worked in the counseling field for over fifteen years. He currently serves as Director of Counseling and Testing at Western Kentucky University. Van Brunt is the president-elect of the American College Counseling Association.
Anthony Montalbano has been working in higher education for ten years and has been involved in many different aspects of student affairs including housing, student activities, campus recreation, athletics and student conduct. Montalbano currently works as a Resident Director at Florida Gulf Coast University. He also worked for a time as a pit-boss at a Florida casino.
