A Toolbox of Strategies for Handling ADA Compliance Issues
Remaining ADA Compliant Takes Work
Are you about to step on a legal landmine?
If you aren’t up-to-date with the Americans with Disabilities Act, then you very well could lose a limb—or at least the institutional equivalent (which is usually time and money).
Don’t squander valuable resources on unnecessary legal battles or governmental audits. Learn what you need to do to remain ADA compliant.
The 90-minute seminar presents an overview of current law, government enforcement initiatives, and emerging best practices in ADA compliance.
Presenters Kathleen Rinehart, J.D., and Ellen Babbitt, J.D., bring decades of experience in education law to this seminar.
While legal issues can be complex, attorneys Rinehart and Babbitt clear up gray areas and untangle convoluted concepts.
They make compliance accessible by providing strategies that are immediately implementable and actionable.
After viewing A Toolbox of Strategies for Handling ADA Compliance Issues, participants will be able to:
- Understand the current definitions of “disability” and “reasonable accommodation;”
- Identify potential ADA issues, including technological and building accessibility;
- Understand how the ADA impacts campus threat assessment and the management of potentially dangerous individuals on campus;
- Implement a consistent framework for addressing accommodation requests or discrimination complaints;
- Train personnel about best practices in resolving accommodation requests and discrimination complaints;
- Advise decision-makers about necessary revisions or updates to institutional ADA or Section 504 policies; and
- Advise decision-makers whether their institution should consider auditing ADA compliance of selected programs, services, or facilities.
Campus supervisors and decision makers need effective strategies for managing ADA concerns or accommodation requests. They may also need strategies for discussing with senior administration the value of auditing policies (or improving campus accessibility) before a complaint is filed or government enforcement begins. This seminar will give college and university leaders the information they need to implement immediate improvements to the administration of on-campus disability services and to begin a broader dialogue with decision-makers about potential accessibility or policy modification.
