Building Service-Learning Programs: 10 Essentials

| |||||||||||||
Service-learning programs are at the top of many schools’ “must-have” lists.
They’re also not an easy thing to implement and manage – just ask Dr. Barbara Jacoby.
Dr. Jacoby knows firsthand about the joys and pitfalls of implementing a service-learning program. One of the nation’s most respected leaders in service-learning programs, she implemented the University of Maryland’s initial program in 1992.
That was eighteen years ago – long before President Obama signed the ServeAmerica Act into law and created a White House Office of Social Innovation.
And long before service-learning was deemed one of the most effective practices for enhancing student learning by the Association of American Colleges and Universities and others.
Back then, Dr. Jacoby was enduring the stunning highs and staggering lows of implementing without much in the way of a blueprint. And by working with other educators across the nation, she’s learned the right way – and the wrong way – to implement a program.
Now she’s ready to share her experiences and dramatically shorten your learning curve with the video online seminar Building Service-Learning Programs: 10 Essentials.
These essentials include:
• Why you should aim high but not do it all
• How to leverage your financial support
• How to collect the right data to prove your success
• What you can do to steer clear of the “dark side” of service-learning
• How to pick the right organizational location and structure
• Why you need to identify both your allies and your detractors
• How to partner with the community so that all parties benefit
The 10 essentials will be explained through concrete examples of practices that work well, as well as those that do not. And because Dr. Jacoby works extensively with colleges and universities across the country, you’ll discover a wide range of examples and different approaches.
Why is it critical you attend, and what will you take away from the seminar?
The people who lead service-based programs tend to come from a variety of different backgrounds. For example, you may have experience in academics, student activities, the non-profit sector, the ministry and/or national service.
With such a wide range of skills, understanding specifically what it will take for your program to succeed is critical. That’s why the 10 essentials will help you:
• Confidently establish a service-learning program at your institution. You’ll understand the essential steps to take – and which ones to avoid.
• Brainstorm your next steps. The seminar is set up to include brainstorming exercises and an interactive Q&A session to help you develop your plan of action.
• Build your resources. You’ll leave the seminar with a wealth of resources and background information that will help you as your process begins and unfolds.
