Developing a Parent Program that Reflects Campus Culture

90-minute recording of live online seminar available in CD or transcript format. Includes program handouts.

By participating in this seminar, you'll learn to:
• Develop criteria to keep in mind when establishing a new parent program
• Understand what parents are concerned about and what they want from colleges and universities
• Consider how to reflect your campus culture as you develop, evaluate, or grow your parent program
• Determine who on campus needs to buy into parent relations—and who already does
• Work through the conflicting demands of parent involvement and student data privacy, both in student services and in the classroom
• Understand what typical parent services schools are currently offering and explore examples of innovative programming and services
• Consider how parent services enhance institutional public relations—and how excellence in parent relations can pay off

Meet the presenter:
Marjorie Savage has worked with parent services at the University of Minnesota since 1993. As the parent program director at the U of M, she serves as a liaison between the school and the parents of its 28,000 undergraduates. She is a nationally recognized authority on college/parent relations, and her book, You’re on Your Own (But I’m here if You Need Me): Mentoring Your Child During the College Years was published by Fireside: Simon & Schuster in 2003.

She is a frequent speaker at national student services and parent relations conferences. She has worked in higher education student services and communications for more than 15 years, and she experienced parent/college relations firsthand when her two sons attended college. She has twice received research grants from the Inter-University Research Committee on Cyprus to study student services and communications at the University of Cyprus. She earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Michigan and a master’s in business communication from the University of St. Thomas.
