Identifying and Responding to Student Red Flag Behaviors

120-Minute Recording of Audio Online Seminar • Originally Broadcast February 29, 2008 • $249

When a student is in distress, there are usually signals of trouble scattered across campus. The challenge is pulling these pieces together to determine what, if any, coordinated response is needed. This seminar addresses the difficulty of meeting that challenge and provides sound advice for dealing with potentially dangerous situations at your institution.

During the seminar, you’ll be introduced to the RiskAware Threat Collection and Analysis tool, an internet-based platform that helps staff, faculty, and students report concerning incidents in real time and, possibly, anonymously. You’ll also learn how your College or University Behavioral Intervention Team (CUBIT) should interpret and act upon this information.

Knowledge benefits for you:
• Understand how to determine a “real” red flag from an incident that does not rise to a level needing response
• Learn appropriate ways to respond to red flags
• Be introduced to an internet-based tool that helps a campus collect, track, and analyze red-flag behaviors
• Understand how FERPA and open-records law affects the use of this type of incident tracking database
• Learn how to assure information will be acted upon appropriately, without turning the campus into “Big Brother”
• Learn how to create a “culture of reporting” on campus that balances safety and privacy needs

Who will benefit from this program:
• Presidents and boards of trustees
• Student affairs administrators
• Judicial administrators
• University legal counsel
• Risk managers
• Residential life administrators
• Campus law enforcement
• Counseling services personnel
• Health services staff
• Members of campus crisis response teams, critical incident stress debriefing teams (CISDTs), and behavioral intervention teams (BITs)

This online seminar is the third in a four-part series on building a team to deal with distressed and disruptive behavior. Part One deals with the basics of forming a CUBIT, Part Two looks more deeply into advanced protocol development, including how the CUBIT should coordinate with other campus and community resources, and Part Four addresses properly assessing threat situations and developing an effective aggression management strategy.
