150-Minute Recording of Audio Online Seminar Originally Broadcast April 4, 2008 $349 Were all familiar with Title IX complaints and cases that revolve around gender equitythe mandate that men and women have equitable opportunities for athletic pursuits. And colleges rightly focus on this aspect of Title IX. However, it is the harassment and retaliation cases related to Title IX that recently have been stealing all the headlines. This event was designed to help athletics administrators understand these causes of action, and how to avoid legal liability within their programs. The seminar is divided into two parts. In the first hour, we share findings of recent research assessing the true costs of athletics scandals. The financial impacts are staggering, well beyond the immediate and easily measurable costs typically found. The second hour concentrates on how to prevent liability and scandal through enhanced risk management. We examine best practices, how to meet the Title IX training standard, and how to deal with other Title IX-based potential liability issues. Scandals tend to form around a constellation of causes corruption, discrimination, crime/violence and sex. Well take a look at how a combination of education, processes (available tools and techniques), and policies embedded within a comprehensive risk management strategy can help you with respect to each of these precipitating problems. The program concludes with some discussion of managing crisis after it occurs. What can we do to respond in an appropriate way without minimizing or covering up the incident? How can we meaningfully address problems before the lid blows off publicly? And, if it does, what are strategic approaches to media relations that will help us to weather the storm?
