Returning Veterans: Implications for Higher Education

90-Minute Recording of Video Online Seminar • Originally Broadcast July 15, 2008 • $369

The new GI Bill has now been signed into law, but debates about whether the United States should bring its troops home from the Middle East continue in Washington - and all around the country. It seems like a new proposition, but for as long as there have been conflicts to which our military has responded, a new wave of veterans enrolls in college upon their return. The men and women coming back from each conflict are slightly different than those from the last war, and the question of whether America's post-secondary education system is prepared to serve today's returning soldiers deserves serious reflection. This online video seminar will look at the impact returning troops will have on higher education and what campuses can do now to help veterans succeed both academically and personally.

Some college faculty and staff members who have been around for a while have had the experience of working with veterans of earlier conflicts, but veterans returning from war today are different from their predecessors. This seminar examines differences and changes in mortality, injury, and survival rates for veterans of the current military actions; the economic and political climates to which they are returning; and some of the characteristics that can be expected of the soldiers themselves.

Most importantly, the seminar includes recommendations on how colleges and universities – especially community, technical, and other two-year and open-enrollment institutions – can improve how they serve veterans in their:
• Lobbying
• Disability services
• Veterans’ services
• Incident response mechanisms (Behavioral Intervention Teams, etc.)
• Mental health services
• Technology
• Faculty/staff training
• Housing

Knowledge benefits for you:
