Powerful New Tools for Homesickness Prevention and Treatment

60-Minute Recording of Audio Online Seminar • Originally Broadcast July 11, 2007 • $99

All traditional-age students miss something about home when they’re away at school. But about 10 to 20 percent experience intense homesickness—and accompanying feelings of depression and anxiety—that interferes with their social, athletic, and academic functioning and can cause them to withdraw from school or take a medical leave of absence. Moreover, supporting these students can soak up lots of time from resident advisers, faculty, and campus health care providers. The good news is that we now have a solid understanding of the risk and protective factors for homesickness. This puts us in an excellent position to prevent intense homesickness as well as to treat any residual symptoms.

Dr. Christopher Thurber has been conducting research on homesickness for more than a decade, and he presents his findings relative to campus life during this online seminar. During this program, Dr. Thurber reviews the myths and facts about homesickness and discusses the factors that predict and buffer against homesickness. His focus then turns to the practical and powerful prevention and treatment strategies that campus staff can apply today to promote their students’ adjustment.

This seminar is recommended for any college or university that is looking to dramatically decrease homesickness in both domestic and international students. Instead of crossing your fingers and hoping for the best, arm yourself with state-of-the-art prevention and treatment strategies proven to promote healthy adjustment.
