Classroom Management 102: Working with Difficult Students
|
| |||||||||
Do the faculty members at your school know how to respond effectively when confronted by uncooperative–or even aggressive–students?
From minor annoyances to major disruptions, difficult college students have no shortage of ways to test professors. At the extreme end of the spectrum are those students who pose a real physical risk to faculty members and classmates and must be handled accordingly.
The need for targeted advice in dealing with inappropriate behavior is increasing as college access expands. Graduate programs typically offer no training in classroom management for aspiring professors, so it is left to employing institutions and individual faculty members to rectify this growing skills deficit.
In Classroom Management 102: Working with Difficult Students, Drs. Brian Van Brunt and Perry Francis will provide faculty members and college administrators with the tools necessary to successfully manage the full-range of student behavior problems. Through the innovative use of in-vivo demonstration scenarios of problematic classroom behaviors, they will share their recommended strategies for responding effectively in an actual instructional setting.
This seminar is different from others you may have seen where the presenters simply talk about theory–here you will see it in action. You will witness role plays demonstrating how to manage difficult student behavior using the methods talked about. Our presenters will also outline what not to do, in a funny and humorous manner that promises to keep you glued to your screens.
This seminar will cover:
- Do’s and Don’ts when working with frustrated or unmotivated students
- Recognizing and attending to misbehavior in its early stages
- Short-circuiting potential violence
- Motivational enhancement therapy
- Strategies to re-direct, manage and calm out of control students
- The aggression continuum and aggression management
- Making referrals to appropriate campus resources
- Classroom crisis management
- Crucial de-escalation strategies
- Working within ADA guidelines to create an optimal learning environment
This unique seminar includes four video demonstrations of typical college classroom problems along with recommended responses, followed by interactive discussion of suggested strategies.
