Enrolling Undocumented Students: Legal and Policy Implications

Undocumented Students and Your College

Recruitment & Retention newsletterEnrolling undocumented students presents unique challenges to colleges and universities.

Their status has far-reaching implications for admissions, financial aid, and student conduct policies.

Recently, when Harvard University sophomore Eric Balderas was taken into custody, he hardly fit the profile of a criminal.

A college sophomore on full scholarship and the valedictorian of his high school class, Balderas had been detained at the airport in Texas.

He was about to board a flight to return to his research work in Boston. His crime? Eric Balderas did not have his Mexican passport.

Eric is an undocumented student, one of over 65,000 high school graduates who are not U.S. citizens.

Enrolling undocumented students presents unique challenges to colleges and universities with far-reaching implications for admissions, financial aid, and student conduct policies.

In this uncertain environment, attempting to create admissions, financial aid, or student policy at your school or university can be a harrowing experience. This video seminar  will help you find solutions.

Navigating through a murky situation
In this 90 minute seminar, Dr. Michael A. Olivas,
Distinguished Chair of Law at the University of Houston and one of the foremost authorities on undocumented students, provides answers to a wide range of questions:

  • How do you define undocumented students, and how do they differ from international students?
  • What is the best way to create an admissions policy for undocumented students within the current legal context, and who should be involved in the process?
  • How have other schools modified their existing policies to accommodate these students’ special circumstances?
  • What are the best ways to deal with the technical requirements for tax and financial aid forms?
  • How can you provide an effective support structure for these students once they are admitted? And what type of support should you provide in the event of an arrest by police or immigration officials?
  • Learn about the legislative situation on both the federal and state level, including the emerging political complexities. You’ll also see examples of successful, well-written policies, as well as mistakes to avoid.
