Facing Trans: Inclusion, Advocacy, and Empowerment
Transgendered Student Issues
This two-part series on one CD allows you and your staff to be prepared and educated about the transgender community on your campus at one cost-effective rate.
Session 1: Beginning the Conversation
Fewer than 500 colleges and universities protect transgender students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors in their non-discrimination policies, yet more and more people are coming forward with trans or gender variant identities that directly challenge existing policies, procedures, and services.
Student affairs professionals need to serve all students and advocate for those marginalized on campus.
- So how do you support transsexual and transgender students?
- Where do you even begin the conversation?
At the same time, you need to create educational moments for less-informed students, staff, and faculty about the trans community, not to mention address the practical issues of bathrooms, residence halls, locker rooms, pronouns, and gender-specific services.
Come prepared to reflect on your own sense of sexuality, gender expression, and physical make-up so you are part of the conversation. This seminar series is a “safe space” for you to ask the questions you really want answered, without embarrassment or reservation.
In this session you will learn:
- To define and recognize the differences between sexual identity, gender identity, and sex
- To describe how sexism and heterosexism are perpetuated by the conflation of sexual identity and gender identity
- How to have the difficult conversations through demonstrations of a conversation model
- The connections between sexism and heterosexism
- The next steps to take to advocate for the trans student community
Session 2: An In-Depth Look at Best Practices
Now that you’ve got a basic understanding of the topic, Session 2 focuses on policies, accommodations, and advocacy for students, staff, and faculty members who are part of the trans community. Using the University of North Carolina Charlotte’s successful trans inclusion program, Trans* at UNC Charlotte, as a model, you will learn how to:
- Build coalitions and community collaborations
- Do a campus wide trans self-assessment
- Deal with road blocks, difficult questions, and campus politics
- Increase awareness and knowledge of the trans/gender variant populations
- Create more higher education administrator advocates for trans needs
- Elevate your home campus as a leader in serving trans populations
