Finding the Right Technology to Support Learning Outcomes

Improving Student Performance

Technology is a part of life on campus and off. Even if your school doesn’t offer any online programs or degrees, you know that the Internet, in particular, plays a big role in higher education.

What you might not know is that sometimes blending classroom and online instruction can actually improve student performance while managing cost and maximizing student and instructor time. And if adopting technology leads to better outcomes, what are you waiting for?

The challenge lies in identifying when technology is most useful and then determining what and how much of it to use. Find out how to evaluate available technologies as well as their applicability to various courses in Finding the Right Technology to Support Learning Outcomes.

This 90-minute seminar, led by Ike Shibley, Ph.D., offers proven strategies for technology to increase flexibility and access, improve student performance, and manage costs.

Shibley is a professor of chemistry at Penn State Berks, a small four-year college within the Penn State system. In addition to his regular coursework, Shibley spent 18 months on a team that redesigned the school’s general chemistry course. Now presented in a web-enhanced format, the course has an average GPA almost 25 percent higher than it did before the redesign. Shibley also redesigned a standard nutrition course to incorporate new technology, and the students of the revised format matched the grades of those in the traditional face-to-face course despite meeting half as often. He teaches a fully online organic chemistry course as well as traditional face-to-face courses. With experience and expertise with technology and course design, Shibley helps you harness the opportunities of technology at their own schools.

After viewing you will be able to do the following:

  • Distinguish learning activities best accomplished in class from those best accomplished online;
  • Access technologies that will facilitate pedagogical goals;
  • Recognize learner-centered course design features;
  • Understand and articulate ways technology can contribute to learner-centered instruction;
  • Compare online and face-to-face communication and delineate benefits of each;
  • Identify which courses are good candidates for technology enhancements.

You can put aside any worries that students will balk at technology-infused courses. Most willingly accept technology as part of higher education. Moreover, the opportunities—improved student performance, increased access and flexibility, and lower cost—are proven and evident.
