How can you strengthen your recruitment of students of color, while also helping more of those students persist and graduate?
To stay relevant and viable in the 21st century, colleges and universities will need to be increasingly inclusive of diversity in their admission policies and retention practices.
As demographics in the United States shift, higher education institutions must remain engaged in educating the future leaders of our country. This means recruiting, retaining, and graduating more students of color.
This imperative is part of higher education’s important mission to serve a growing multicultural population while preparing citizens to participate in an increasingly global society.
If you haven’t reviewed your admissions policies lately, now is a great time to revise them from the perspective of broadening your awareness of multicultural issues.
In Grounding Recruitment & Retention Plans in a Multicultural Model, Rev. Dr. Jamie Washington will provide practical tools, models, and best practices for recruiting, retaining and graduating students of color over the next ten years.
What you will learn in this strategic and thought-provoking seminar:
• Strategies for recruiting different student of color populations
• Important do’s and don’ts
• How to communicate and work with family members of students of color
• Recruitment, selection, and admission processes—including working with marketing, financial aid, and recruitment staff—that increase inclusiveness
• Orientation, summer bridge, retention programs and services with a focus on similarities and difference for different student of color groups
• Practical ways to address resistance and backlash to these programs
• How to evaluate your existing campus climate and institutional readiness to go beyond increasing numbers to creating a more inclusive campus environment
• Ways to involve faculty staff, alumni and community members of color
You will also have the opportunity to participate in polling questions and to complete a short assessment about your campus and its existing level of inclusivity during this live seminar.
