Identifying and Managing Classroom Aggression and Violence
Danger In The Classroom
Can you recognize a potentially dangerous student in your class?
Do you know when a minor classroom disruption might foreshadow a larger threat to the entire campus community?
With training, faculty can learn to spot aggressive behavior and respond appropriately to stabilize a risky situation and safeguard the community.
Too often, college officials adopt a reactionary approach, putting procedures in place to deal with a dangerous situation after it has occurred. Unfortunately, Crisis Management does not prevent aggression.
Brian Van Brunt, Ed.D., and Perry C. Francis, Ph.D. train you how to identify and respond to aggressive behavior to help prevent the next campus tragedy from occurring in this 90-minute seminar.
This seminar is led by an authorized Aggression Management Trainer and addresses:
- Identifying markers for the trigger, escalation and crisis phases of aggression
- Threat assessment and conflict resolution
- How to recognize the physical and behavioral cues that accompany aggression
- The crucial difference between “primal” and “cognitive” aggressors
- Using emotional weighting, verbal manipulation and pacing with the aggressor
- How to detect when you’re being deceived
- Using persuasion and trust as communication tools
- Ways to escape an at-risk situation before it becomes a crisis
- Effective ways to deal with classroom disruption
Who will benefit from this seminar?
- New faculty
- Experienced faculty members
- Front-line academic affairs staff who deal directly with students
- All levels of higher education
We includes relevant case studies and examples of how to manage aggression and prevent violence in the classroom. Also included are strategies for handling different predictable types of aggressors, ranging from “the sniper” and “the Sherman tank” to “the exploder” and “the bulldozer.”
