Including Non-Traditional Measures in Admissions: Why? How?

College Admissions Changes

When it comes to evaluating prospective college and university students’ applications, it’s imperative to go beyond GPAs and traditional test scores to identify today’s best and brightest.

Grade inflation reduces the usefulness of grades, while standardized tests measure only a limited span of student abilities.

There are more creative and complete ways to analyze student applicants – ways that paint a much more accurate and complete picture.

Do you know about the latest methods to use assessments that measure analytical, practical, creative, wisdom-based, and leadership skills?

You can learn more about it from a most respected voice in using nontraditional methods in admissions from Dr. Robert Sternberg, author of "College Admissions for the 21st Century" (2010, Harvard University Press).

What you’ll learn

  • How to design, create, score, and tabulate data from enhanced admission procedures.
  • Look at the analytical, practical, creative, wisdom-based, and leadership skills of applicants applying to your college or university, including graduate programs.
  • Why it’s so important for your college or university to measure nontraditional skills.

We show how you can:

  • Create assessments which measure analytical, practical and creative skills
  • Score them using rubrics
  • Post scores so it makes the most sense to those who evaluate applications
  • Analyze data trends to see how strong an entering class or particular students within it are.

By assessing this wider variety of skills, admissions and financial aid staff can look at applicant qualities that may otherwise be overlooked or undervalued. Dr. Sternberg presents you with two projects that measured nontraditional skills, along with results. He gives examples of successful material used and the skills they measured, and discusses rubrics for scoring response to the materials. He also shows how the results were worked in to the admission process.
