Managing the Adjunct Pool for Consistent Learning Outcomes
Changing Times: Managing Adjuncts
Adjunct faculty is a reality of higher education today.
The use of adjuncts is on the rise and will continue to grow as colleges deal with economic challenges by hiring fewer full-time, tenure-track professors.
Just thirty years ago, adjuncts (part-time faculty and full-time faculty not on a tenure track) accounted for 43 percent of professors, according to the American Association of University Professors. Currently, nearly 70 percent of professors at colleges and universities, both public and private, are adjuncts.
The use of adjunct faculty, while clearly a necessity, is not without criticism or pitfalls. Universities and colleges must be careful not to create an unmotivated, unsupervised, “underclass” of instructors. Adjunct faculty need care, attention and sound management.
Without a system to manage quality, a large adjunct faculty pool can compromise the overall integrity of a department, or even an entire institution.
In this 75-minute seminar, two experienced administrators share their system for successfully supporting a large pool of adjuncts, including evaluation, development and assignment.
Discover how to:
- Utilize a clear system for screening and selecting quality adjunct faculty.
- Implement orientation and training for consistent learning outcomes.
- Implement ongoing faculty development for adjuncts.
- Implement a system of faculty evaluation of teaching. (Handouts included!)
- Retain quality adjuncts by rewarding them for quality teaching.
