Service-Learning Course Design Workshop & Consultation
Learn from an expert in service-learning
Service-learning is a wonderful premise: Rich academic content conveyed within the context of community service, benefiting students and the community alike.
When you begin to explore the concept, though, issues quickly arise:
- How do you find a service component that meshes well with academic content?
- How do you manage the logistics?
- How do you build a syllabus?
- Is service-learning even practical in your discipline?
Everyone has those questions.
Now you can become your campus/service-learning authority. Learn from the country’s foremost authority on service-learning, in this special online workshop and consultation program with a personal touch.
A unique duo of online interactive service-learning workshops
Workshop #1 : June 21, 2012
In 90 minutes Dr. Jacoby introduces you to the key principles of service-learning with a specially developed workbook produced just for this workshop:

- The fundamentals of service-learning course design.
- First steps in developing a service-learning course syllabus
- Steps in modifying an existing service-learning syllabus
- Concrete examples of how service-learning can work in any discipline.
- How to develop appropriate outcomes for students and community organizations.
- How to build relationships with community partners.
- How to handle logistical issues (tools, materials, dress, risk management, transportation, safety, etc.).
Develop your plan with online discussion
In the week following the initial workshop, Dr. Jacoby will moderate three online chats:
Monday, June 25th at noon, Tuesday, June 26th at 9 a.m., and Wednesday, June 27th at 3 p.m. (all times Central)
You'll be invited to post ideas, share syllabi for review, and submit questions as you formulate your approach to service- learning. Dr. Jacoby will give recommendations to help fine-tune submitted syllabi.
Workshop #2 : June 28, 2012
In 90 minutes, Dr. Jacoby will:
- Review in depth roughly a half-dozen syllabi submitted by participants and highlight their strengths.
- Explain how to integrate key elements into your own syllabus.
- Help you and other participants fine-tune the work you’ve done over the preceding week.
- Leave you with a solid roadmap to service-learning success.
Bonus: Over $500 of Supplemental Materials
- Three fast, focused Magna 20 Minute Mentor programs on CD, all presented by Dr. Jacoby:
- A copy of the Dr. Jacoby's Magna white paper “Service-Learning Course Design: What Faculty Need to Know"
- An extensive list of print and web resources.
Consulting at a fraction of the cost
To bring a consultant like Dr. Jacoby to your campus for a pair of workshops and a week of assistance, you’d pay thousands of dollars. That wouldn’t include the cost of the supplemental materials in this program, themselves worth nearly $600.
Through this innovative Service-Learning Course Design Workshop & Consultation program, you’ll pay far less.
The entire program is just $829 for one person, and $799 each for two or more–when you register by June 14th, 2012. After that the price goes up by $70 so register early and save.
Act now as this program is limited to the first 75 registrations!
