Strategies to Decrease Binge Drinking: Templates, Advice and Lists

Responding to Student Binge Drinking

Students drink.

  • They drink too much.
  • They drink too often.
  • They drink too much, too often.

As a result, we have a national collegiate binge-drinking epidemic.

The situation is alarming enough that over 130 college presidents and chancellors have signed on to the Amethyst Initiative, the controversial call for debate on lowering the drinking age.

Good people hold strong positions on both sides of that issue.

But, the one thing everyone agrees on is that something must be done.

Not that schools haven’t made a concerted effort … but on most campuses, that effort has been to little avail.

There is a notable exception.

At  Frostburg State University, an aggressive program to de-emphasize alcohol on campus has brought together constituencies ranging from administrators, to law enforcement, to bar owners, to students themselves. And the results have been impressive by almost any measure, including this one: repeat underage drinking citations are down an eye-popping 80% at Frostburg State University.

The president of Frostburg State University, Jonathan Gibralter, Ph.D., and its Director of Student Development, Jesse Ketterman, Ph.D., share their school’s success story as review the program they built to address binge drinking.

They cover:

  • Initiating a top-down program of culture change.
  • Partnering with local law enforcement agencies.
  • Working collaboratively with your state liquor control board.
  • Developing alternative programming for students.
  • Engaging local landlords, neighborhood associations, bar owners and alcohol distributors.
  • Effectively addressing the roles and attitudes of fraternities, sororities and athletic departments.
  • Involving parents in prevention efforts.
