General FAQs
What is a Magna Online Seminar?
A Magna Online Seminar is an online presentation, conference or workshop that is delivered entirely over the Internet on your computer. No telephone connection is needed. You simply connect to a private weblink that will be emailed to you and access the seminar.
How does a Magna Online Seminar work?
During a Magna Online Seminar, the presenter speaks on a topic in his or her area of expertise. Magna Online Seminars are presented on your computer in a browser window that features a slide show presentation in one panel, video when available, and sound and playback controls.
The seminar may be viewed on a single computer screen or be projected onto a larger screen or monitor for a group setting.
Click here to jump down on this page for a detailed list of system requirements.
How do I ask the presenter questions during a Magna Online Seminar, Mediasite version?
You may submit a question at any time during the live seminar by clicking on the "Ask a Question" icon near the bottom right-hand portion of the computer screen.
- A separate window will pop up on your screen, where you can type in your question.
- After you click the “Ask Question” button, your question will go to our moderator who will relay questions from participants to the presenter(s).
- This feature does not work in full screen mode, you will need to take your computer out of full screen mode to use the "Ask Question" button.
- When the presentation is not live, clicking the "Ask" icon will bring up an email client.
How do I advance the slides?
The slides are shown as the presenter advances them during the live seminars. Copies of the slides are included in the printable seminar handouts. While viewing the seminar on CD or on-demand, you can skip ahead or go back to a previous slide. If the slides seem to be stuck, not advancing or out of sync with the presenter's speech during a live seminar, please refresh your browser.
When will I receive the connection instructions/link to handouts?
The person who purchased/registered for the seminar will receive an email from Magna Publications three business days prior to the Magna Online Seminar. It will include a unique link to the online seminar and a link to the presentation handouts. You will also receive an email reminder the morning of the seminar. Please be sure to enable emails coming in from Magna Publications Customer Service.
I did not recieve an email with the seminar link
An email is sent to the email address provided at registration both 3 days prior to the seminar and the day of the seminar. If you have not received these emails, check your spam filter or junk mail folder for a message from magnapubs.com. Emails from Magna Publications may be blocked or filtered; check with your IT staff for assistance.
Contact us at support@magnapubs.com or call 800-433-0499, ext. 2 or 608-246-3590, ext. 2.
I am not able to participate in the live event. Are there any options to watch a recorded version of the same Magna Online Seminar later?
You may register for the seminar if you're not available to view it live. The seminar is available to watch on-demand starting one hour after the presentation concludes. You have three business days for viewing on demand. The recorded version does allow you to rewind/fast forward/skip to certain portions in the recorded program. It does not offer the ability to ask questions of the presenter.
You may also purchase the recording of the seminar on CD-ROM which includes transcript, presenter handouts, discussion guide and supplements. Please review our online seminar product catalog.
How many people from my institution can participate?
Magna Online Seminar registration fees are priced per internet connection to the private seminar link, not per person. That means one PC can be connected to the seminar, but an unlimited number of people can gather together and participate using that single connection. Many users purchase a single connection and view the seminar on a large screen using a video projector.
We do offer substantial discounts for multiple connections, which is a great way for staff at different campuses or locations to participate without having to travel. If you have additional sites that would like to register for the same program, please contact our Customer Service Department support@magnapubs.com for prices and options.
May I give the Web link of the Magna Online Seminar to a colleague for viewing from a different location?
No, the link to a Magna Online Seminar cannot be shared or used more than once, as it is sold as a single connection. Once you connect to the presentation via the private weblink, no one else can use that link to connect to the presentation from a different computer.
Can I relay or "conference in" the Magna Online Seminar to other sites?
Each registration to a Magna Online Seminar constitutes one location where it can be viewed by as many people as can be accommodated there. Any recording, relaying, or other retransmitting of an audio/web seminar is prohibited.
Can I record the live presentation of the Magna Online Seminar?
Copyright laws prohibit the recording of our seminars. The program is offered on CD for purchase once the seminar is concluded. If you participate in the live seminar, we offer the CD to participants at a discount. An order form is included in the handouts you receive three business days prior to the seminar.
I will have more than one person viewing the Magna Online Seminar - may I photocopy the handout for the other participants?
You are allowed to make photocopies of seminar handouts for other participants.
Do you have transcripts of Magna Online Seminars?
Yes, transcripts are included on the seminar CD for all seminars produced after January 1, 2011. Prior to that date transcripts may be ordered on the seminar information page.
What is your cancellation policy?
You may cancel your seminar registration and receive a refund, minus a cancellation fee of $25.00, up to 7 days prior to the seminar. If you cancel your registration less than one week prior to the scheduled seminar date, you will be charged the full registration fee. Seminar cancellations must be submitted to Magna Publications Customer Service, email to support@magnapubs.com or by writing.
What happens if the Magna Online Seminar incurs delays in the program?
We do our best to avoid technical issues with our programs.
- In the event that we do run into technical difficulties before or during our program, we communicate to our audience through the seminar itself and/or via email.
- If an issue prevents us from being able to correct the technical issue within 10 minutes, the program will be rescheduled to take place within the next 10 days. We will notify attendees of the new date and time via email.
- Customers can view the program on-demand for three business days following the presentation or opt to receive a CD of the program or receive a full refund.
What if I need to submit my order in hard copy (to accompany a purchase order, for example)?
We accept bill-me orders and institutional purchase orders for all Magna Online seminar registrations. Please enter the purchase order number during the online shopping cart process or print our downloadable PDF order form and mail it in. Fax or scan and email this form back to us. Download the seminar registration form here to order on paper.
Do you offer Continuing Education Credits for Magna Online Seminars?
We do not offer Continuing Education Credits for any of our programs. If you would like to see CEU's offered for future programs, please include your comments in the electronic evaluation you will receive shortly after the program, or email your comments to onlineseminars@magnapubs.com.

Mediasite Video Presentations issues on my PC
Please test the Mediasite demonstration using the same PC and equipment that you will be using for the live event
I cannot hear any audio on my PC
- Verify that your computer speakers are powered on and your computer's volume level is set at an audible level.
I'm having video playback issues on my PC
Most video issues are related to your internet connection speed. If the video is continually buffering during a seminar, your internet connection speed at your institution is slow. Please check that you meet the minimum requirements, including having bandwidth speed of at least 512 Kbps.
You can also try adjusting the streaming protocol settings in Media Player:
- Open Windows Media Player and click Tools/Options.
- Go to the PLAYER tab and be sure "Connect to Internet" is marked with a check.
- Go to NETWORK tab, and under the heading "Streaming Protocols", be sure all of the boxes (RTSP/UDP, RTSP/TCP, and HTTP) are marked with a check.
- Close out of Media Player and re-connect to the presentation link (you may have to exit your browser first before the changes take effect).
- If you are still having playback issues, re-do steps 3 and 4 above, trying each of the following modified settings one at a time:
- Uncheck RTSP/UDP and RTSP/TCP and leave the HTTP check box checked.
- Uncheck HTTP and RTSP/TCP and leave the RTSP/UDP check box checked.
- Uncheck HTTP and RTSP/UDP and leave the RTSP/TCP check box checked.
Please note: if you are uncomfortable changing these settings, or are unauthorized to do so, please consult with your IT staff before attempting to make them.
For IT staff: Please ensure the following ports are open for the Windows Media stream:
- UDP: 554, 5005
- TCP: 554
- HTTP: 80
Mediasite Video Presentations issues on my Mac
I'm having Flip4Mac plug-in issues
Mediasite presentations must use the Windows Media plug-in to play. They will not play if you have the Flip4Mac Windows Media component for QuickTime installed on your Mac. To disable the plug-in:
- Click your desktop, and select Apple > System Preferences to open the Mac System Preferences.
- Click Flip4Mac WMV under Other.
- On the Plug-in tab, clear the "Use Flip4Mac WMV Internet Plug-in" checkbox.
- Exit the dialog to save your changes.
- Try to play a presentation. If it still doesn’t play back, go to the next section.
Starting a presentation is very slow on my Mac
When viewing a Mediasite presentation on Mac systems running 10.4.x, there may be a long
delay before playback begins. In some cases, this delay can be a minute or more.
Note: This problem only seems to affect Mac OS 10.4.x. Earlier versions do not seem to have any
delay issues when starting playback
To resolve:
- Open Windows Media Player by selecting Go > Applications > Windows Media Player.
- From the toolbar select Windows Media Player > Preferences > Network Settings tab.
- Uncheck TCP and UDP boxes and click OK.
