Why are there so few internal promotions to CIO? Colleges and universities seem to have reconciled themselves to searching every three or four years for a new CIO from “outside.” Fresh leadership is sometimes necessary, but when replacement means having to look elsewhere, there are larger disruptions in the IT unit and ultimately greater costs in lost productivity, searching, and departure of other personnel who feel overlooked or who do not feel comfortable in the new regime.
