Instructional Technology: A Reality Check
By Thomas Warger
Only a handful of elite institutions have on their rosters instructional technology support staff with the numbers and talent to help transform education methods. The “standard model” for IT organizations at campuses of most sizes consists of user services, systems and network, administrative databases, and instructional support. The names vary, of course. User services is called “desktop services.” The term “administrative” is unfashionable – perhaps reminding some people too much of the old MIS or data processing era, even though the same clientele and needs still exist. Support for faculty and the curriculum is one of the oldest tasks in technology support, but today this wing of the IT organism is more often than not underdeveloped and underpowered.
