Working Toward Unity in the IT Staff

Some sources of discord within information technology staffs are almost unavoidable. Chief among these, though perhaps a surprise to observers from outside the IT world, is the focus on customers. Those who work with faculty at large or even just a discipline group within the larger faculty can feel more attached to those “customers” than to staff colleagues in other groups within the IT support organization.

Are You ‘Emotionally Intelligent’?

We all know this person: smart, capable, an excellent technologist, able to work well under pressure, but somehow not able to break through to the upper levels of his or her career. Something about this person makes the president and others at the institution uncomfortable; something about this person prevents the world from seeing him or her as a true leader. There’s something missing, something not quite right, something gone awry. What is it? It may be that this person, as smart and as technically capable as he or she is, is not emotionally intelligent.
