Information Technology Allies: What We Need from Them

Everyone on campus (and in the e-learning network) knows what he or she expects from the IT support operation. Now it is time to talk about what IT needs from other offices at the institution in order to give the best service. This is more than a matter of mutual interest between the service providers and client offices: information technology support for the whole community depends increasingly on wide participation and fundamental cooperation.

Executive Oversight of IT

What is the right degree of executive oversight for information technology? Many CIOs will tell you, privately, that they cannot believe how little effective supervision they receive from the person to whom they report—or that their executive cares remarkably little about IT and only pays attention when there is a crisis. Some other CIOs find they are micromanaged by executives who are too ready to insert their own opinions on technical matters or find themselves drawn into IT negotiations with faculty and departments but leave out the CIO.
