Campus Events Professional - April 2006 - Full Issue PDF

From the Editor
For most parts of the country, April brings the beginnings of spring and the promise not only of better weather but also of the summer breaks on campus. As I write this in the weather-variable Midwest, you can be sure that I have pepper seedlings under the grow lights, eagerly awaiting those warm days when they can be planted outside.

What Went Wrong: Lessons from a Seasoned Event Planner
Read here for four key lessons about being prepared for adversity.

Branding Your Event
Why should an event planner be concerned about branding? For Dick Bruso, president and founder of Heard Above the Noise, the answer is simple. “It’s all about setting yourself apart,” he says. In the higher education community, setting the institution and its events apart is more important than ever. Students and parents have “many choices as far as universities or colleges go,” says Bruso. Universities themselves are also often specialists in a given area of academic, extracurricular, or experiential endeavor. Helping these two populations find one another is part of the mission of branding.

Creating Policies for Summer Camps and Conferences
Summer camp and conference season is fast upon us, and planners may be wondering how to make campus guests aware of policies and procedures—or, indeed, if any sort of notification is necessary. According to Marie Burgess, director of summer camps and conferences for Furman University in Greenville, S.C., publication of policies and procedures is not just nice, it is essential.

Lavender Graduation
When Ronni Sanlo, director of the LGBT Campus Resource Center at UCLA, was working at the University of Michigan in 1994, she noticed a number of special commencement events intended to celebrate the cultural backgrounds of the participants as well as their success in earning a degree. Special graduation events existed for African American students and for Latino students, among other groups, but nothing existed for the LGBT community.
