Take the Poll!
Last month's question was "Do you feel that you have enough opportunities to interact with students outside the classroom? What steps has your department/institution taken to encourage interaction with students outside the classroom?"
Nearly three-fourths (72%) of respondents said yes, they do feel they have opportunities to interact with students outside of the classroom.
In response to the follow up question, many indicated their schools sponsor social activities and ask for faculty to attend, or their department asks for faculty volunteers to sponsor student groups and activities. Several said they keep office hours conducive to student visits, and they are available even outside of "normal" office hours via phone and internet/chat. Other interesting ways that were listed include putting department faculty offices inside dorm buildings, "Dinner with a Prof" and attending campus events where students will be present (concerts, picnics, community service projects, etc.), not as a sponsor but to be available to students.
This month's question is "Have you taught an online course? Do you plan to teach an online course in the upcoming academic year? Does your institution provide additional compensation or other incentives to teach online?"
