Take The Poll
Last month's question was "Please indicate the degree to which you agree or disagree to the following statement: My academic unit strongly supports my efforts to improve my teaching."
The majority of those who responded said they agree - their academic unit does support efforts to improve teaching. Although the relatively positive responses were peppered with qualifying statements such as: "In theory absolutely yes, but in practice absolutely no because we are a resource-starved public institution with 14,000 students and 500 FT teachers. So, no time for anyone in the Department to assist anyone else (new FTs, Adjuncts) on any matter, except for the occasional ad-hoc interaction. Wish it weren't so." and "I think my academic unit is supportive, although I don't believe I can say that the support rises to the level of "strong" support."
Lastly, a comment that summarizes the overall tone of responses quite succinctly, "Much encouragement, not many ideas."
This month's question is "Please indicate the degree to which you agree or disagree to the following statement: My academic unit does a good job of mentoring new faculty"
