Family Acceptance Critical for GLBT Youth
Leading advocates for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights on campus want, perhaps as much as anything, students to have the support and acceptance of parents and family. Love of family members, particularly those who practice intolerant religions, can mean the difference between success in life and heartbreaking struggle for GLBT youth.

In what may seem simple logic, young people who are accepted and shown love by their friends, family and parents are more likely to be successful as adults. The good fortune of acceptance certainly can lead to higher spirits and lower health risks. But according to research set for release later this year, these basics are far-reaching: they promise to bring about programs of education and advocacy for the whole family of GLBT youth, as opposed to treating the sexual identity of a child as separate from the family. So says the Family Acceptance Project, outlined in this issue in an interview with Caitlin Ryan, the co-director of the project.
