Preventing Substance Abuse as a Retention Strategy at Lynn University

Our mission as educators is to facilitate learning and allow students to define, discover, and prepare themselves to successfully achieve their personal and professional goals. One application of this mission that is particularly challenging is helping students learn how to examine their use, abuse, and potential addiction to alcohol and other drugs.

Communication 101: The lead story for the last issue of the year of the Daily Northwestern (www.dailynorthwestern.com) was titled Females struggle for tenure: Gender bias issues resurface after announcement, but the heading could have been Is this the best tone for administrators to take when communicating with students? The story includes this quote from Northwestern University President Henry Bienen: Of course Northwestern does not discriminate against females or anyone else. The reporter attributed this remark to an email sent from Croatia.

Over the last two years, I have had a running conversationan education, actuallywith a student in our Higher Education and Student Affairs masters program. Garrett is not your typical student: he is older than most by five or six years, has an intense commitment to social justice, and loves hip-hop. Until meeting Garrett, I had an outsiders negative view of hip-hop. I incorrectly thought it was the same genre as rap, with predominantly misogynistic and racist lyrics.
