Student Development Training for Campus Police

Some students think that campus police or security officers are just “wannabe cops.” Some officers believe that students aren’t mature enough to make important decisions. But both of these stereotypes can be dismantled through proper student development training for officers, says Ralph Hatley. Hatley is principal of Security Operational Solutions, Inc., a private security and safety consulting practice. Before opening the practice, he was public safety director at Rhodes College in Tennessee for 14 years. He shared a few thoughts recently with Student Affairs Leader on how students and campus officers sometimes misunderstand one another:
