As major employers, colleges and universities need to understand and adhere to federal employment standards. Many of the laws have been in place for decades, but some more recent efforts need to be carefully considered on campus to protect institutional interests and employee rights. One of the more significant employment changes came in 1993 with adoption of the Family and Medical Leave Act.

Cross Examination: Trying to Rule Off-Campus
At the University of Wisconsin, some officials are seeking input on a possible expansion of campus conduct rules. They are considering expanding campus jurisdiction to off-campus behaviors. For example, UW-Milwaukee is looking the change in an effort to address issues in the surrounding community. They note a sharp decline in family home ownership near the campus and increased student misbehavior over a ten-year period. They are also looking at the possibility of using a progressive discipline system for off-campus problems. The first student offense could lead to a warning, with subsequent offenses resulting in meetings, then suspensions and expulsions.

Cases Noted: Is it a Man’s Job?
She insists that she lost her job at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary due to gender. Her classes had been on biblical Hebrew the last six years. After two years as a teaching fellow, she was made an assistant professor and put on a tenure track in 2002. She maintains that she taught for seven years, published in journals and had good evaluations.
