Thorns Where There Once Was a Rose Garden

There are more than 80,000 department chairs employed in the more than 3,600 institutions of higher education in the United States. Chairs serve an average of six years. Fully 20 percent of chairs leave their position each year. Seventy-five percent go back to being regular faculty when their term as chair ends. I have conducted national surveys (N = 500) of the demographics of department chairs.
