Helping Students Learn from Ethical Failures: Changing Organizational Responses to Student Cheating

Academic integrity violations are undoubtedly the most common ethical failures with which colleges and universities deal on a daily basis. In international surveys, students self-report a rather high engagement in cheating, especially in areas of working with others when the instructor has asked for individual work (42 percent) and plagiarism (38 percent) (McCabe, 2005). At the University of California, San Diego, about a third of students who have been reported for academic integrity violations admit that they have plagiarized, copied other students’ papers or assignments, or worked with others when the instructor has asked for individual work.†
