The Danger of FIRE

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. FIRE was founded in 1999 by Alan Charles Kors and Harvey A. Silverglate following their publication of The Shadow University: The Betrayal of Liberty on America’s Campuses (The Free Press, 1998), a criticism of perceived “thought reform” taking place in higher education. FIRE’s mission is to defend individual rights within America’s colleges and universities, including “freedom of speech, legal equality, due process, religious liberty, and sanctity of conscience—the essential qualities of individual liberty and dignity.”†
