Social Media on Campus: New Challenges, New Opportunities
Relationships these days are often complicated, but never more so than when a faculty member finds himself or herself unwittingly caught in the middle of a messy breakup between two students. Thatís exactly what happened recently to a professor at a prestigious Midwestern university. After a†couple of students in his class who had been dating broke up, one of them began using the class Facebook page to post defamatory comments about the other. Clearly, thatís not what the professor envisioned when he set up the account. Moreover, it occurred to him that he might in some way be held legally responsible for those comments, or at least for allowing them to remain on the page.
