Taking the Plunge into Mobile Learning: The Basics

Nomophobia is a neologism defined as “the fear of being out of mobile phone contact.” One study in Britain found over half of all mobile phone users were anxious when they “lose their mobile phone, run out of battery or credit, or have no network coverage.”A growing number of educators see educational potential in nomophobia. Since all these people are already accustomed to having their mobile devices in hand at all times, they believe that the devices present an opportunity to teach and learn in different ways.Contemplating mobile learning may be a necessity for institutions preparing to serve future generations of learners who have different expectations of the educational process.
