Times are tight, and state funding seems to dry up further with each new budgeting cycle. Perhaps, some colleges and universities administrators suggest, it is time to consider a partnership with an outside corporation, crafted for the benefit of both. The thought usually brings a visceral reaction from those for whom partnering with a for-profit company is tantamount to selling one's institutional soul to the devil. Their fears may have some foundation in the well-publicized experiences of financially strapped K-12 districts.
