Help RAs and Campus Police Work Together

Madison, Wis.—August 2 On many campuses, resident advisors and security or police officers don’t have much interaction with one another until a problem occurs. In addition, on some campuses, there’s not just a lack of interaction but also a bit of antipathy and mistrust. This hampers both groups’ ability to respond effectively to students’ concerns and needs.

During the August 2 Magna Online Seminar “Behind Closed Doors: Co-Training for RAs and Campus Security,” Ralph Hatley, a security consultant and past safety director at Rhodes College, offered a solution: including both groups in a joint role-play training session that addresses the situations they might face together.

In addition to offering two examples of such role-playing exercises, he offered the following advice for creating other exercises:
The role-playing exercises should address routine issues as well as areas that have recently presented problems
Learning objectives for each role-playing exercise should be clearly explained to participants before role-playing begins
The participants should be able to stop the role-playing the first time through to ask questions and receive coaching

The joint exercises can be part of regularly-scheduled training as well as part of “on-demand” training after an incident occurs, Hatley said.
