Distance Education and the Glass Ceiling

Madison, Wis.—October 18The glass ceiling for women in higher education does exist, says Darcy Hardy, executive director, of the University of Texas’ UT TeleCampus. And although women have capitalized on the emergence of e-learning to secure leadership positions within the field, there is still progress to be made, she says.

During a recent Magna Online Seminar “Dancing on the Glass Ceiling: Women and Leadership in E-Learning,” Hardy offered advice to women and men interested in addressing pay equity in e-learning and becoming better leaders within the field.

For example, women are often skilled at multitasking, Hardy said. And while that’s a desirable ability, it can also backfire, leading women to overfill their schedules and perhaps do a mediocre job on many projects rather than a great job on a more reasonable number.

“Don’t take on projects where you don’t have enough time to be successful,” she advised.

Hardy also noted that salary records at public universities can be viewed by faculty members or administrators who want to research pay equity. “Public records are public,” she said. “Use them.”
