Learn to use tuition discounting effectively

Madison, Wis.—November 1Tuition discounting is a powerful tool, but some institutions don’t know how to use it properly, say two experts on higher education pricing.

Often, a poor grasp of tuition discounting basics is to blame. To address this problem, Magna Publications presented the online seminar “Strategic Thinking about Pricing and Tuition Discounting” on November 1.

During the live seminar Ron Allan, assistant to the dean for Research and Data Services in the Office of Student Financial Services at Georgetown University, and Lucie Lapovsky, an economist who concentrates on higher education finance, reviewed tuition discounting nuts and bolts.

Allan and Lapovsky also discussed how to address a common misconception about tuition pricing: that it helps less affluent students at the expense of the more affluent. They offered rebuttals to this “Robin Hood effect” and demonstrated how tuition discounting benefits the whole institution, not just students who require financial aid.
