| Distance Learning Faculty Liaisons Offer Advice Erie Community College South in New York does not have an online course designer, and to a large extent, faculty are on their own when it comes to creating their online courses. The campus does, however, have two distance learning faculty liaisons, Jason Steinitz and Mary Beth Orrange. Both are online instructors who help their colleagues navigate the colleges course management system and offer advice on principles they have found effective in their online course. Distance Education Report recently spoke with Steinitz and Orrange about the advice they give their colleagues. |

The same holds true with diploma mills except that these false sources of degrees cause harm to the entire academic enterprise, particularly distance learning programs. |
| A System for Managing Online Faculty By Kathleen Vail Managing faculty is one of the big challenges in online education. It is especially difficult when a program uses adjunct professors to teach many of its classes. Norwich University in Northfield, Vt., has developed a system of training and monitoring online faculty for its online masters degree programs that allows it to take advantage of using adjunct faculty while minimizing the problems associated with off-campus teachers. |
| The Athabasca Process: Streamlined Learning Athabasca University, in Alberta, Canada caters almost exclusively to distance learners, and has a completely open admissions policy. The student body numbers about 35,000, with a relatively small staff to meet their needs. Athabascas course designers have had to develop an extraordinarily streamlined system to manage courseware and student information, as well as handle student queries and allow contact between students and academic faculty. |
| State of Michigan Adopts Online Course Requirement for High Schoolers Students in Michigan may soon be coming to college with the experience of online study under their belts. This is since the approval of a new graduation requirement by the Michigan State Board of Education. |
