Athabasca University, in Alberta, Canada caters almost exclusively to distance learners, and has a completely open admissions policy. The student body numbers about 35,000, with a relatively small staff to meet their needs. Athabasca’s course designers have had to develop an extraordinarily streamlined system to manage courseware and student information, as well as handle student queries and allow contact between students and academic faculty.
