For the University System of Georgia, commitment to distance learning comes in the form of eCore, a set of some 25 online courses that students can use to craft the first two years of an undergraduate degree (see Distance Education Report May 15, 2006). Each course in the eCore program makes use of numerous pieces of intellectual property. Because the program includes many courses, determining proper permissions to use the intellectual property quickly became burdensome.
