Academic Freedom vs. Teaching Online: Calling a Truce?

“When a person begins to feel as though Big Brother is watching their progress in their Internet course, then that becomes very disconcerting… To me that smacks of an infringement of academic freedom,” says Gwen Whitehead, associate professor of English at Lamar State College-Orange (LSCO), in Orange, Texas. Whitehead and her colleagues have been going through a long process of trying to find a balance between the precepts of academic freedom and the requirement of putting a pedagogically sound online course together. Is there some basic incompatibility between the two imperatives? There may be an answer in Whitehead’s story.
