Penn State’s World Campus is recognized as one of the most successful of the many online programs launched by American universities in the late 90’s. The World Campus delivers over 50 distance education programs to learners in 43 countries. In 2002, the World Campus received the American Distance Education Consortium’s (ADEC) Barrier Buster Award. In delivering the award, ADEC Executive Director Janet Poley said that the World Campus "serves as a prototype for the still developing field of online distance education nationally."
