If the first generation of online learning efforts was about coaxing as many people and as many courses as possible onto the Internet, then the next generation is certainly about quality assurance. However, deciding on criteria with which to assess a distance education course, and then gaining acceptance for the assessment process, can be a difficult task. This is just the task that has been undertaken by MarylandOnline and its new program, Quality Matters.
