Ideas for Memorable Summer Alumni Events Summertime at most universities means its time to welcome alumni back to the campuses they once called home. While most colleges have had their alumni events planned for at least several weeks, savvy event planners may be looking for an extra event or two to spice up their calendars. We asked colleges and universities across the country for some of their top alumni event ideas for summer 2007, and the following themes emerged.
Editors Letter: Down Memory Lane When I worked for my alma maters alumni affairs office, the best time of year was unquestionably the summer reunion weekend. Since I was very interested in university history, I made an attempt to learn locations of favorite campus landmarks and local gathering places as they would be remembered by the various generations.
Permission for Creativity: Planning an Inaugural at Agnes Scott College When Marilyn Hammond, communications manager at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA, and her colleagues set out to plan an inaugural for new president Elizabeth Kiss (pronounced like quiche), they struck just the right balance between planning carefully and allowing flexibility and spontaneity. Hammonds lessons are useful for anyone planning a similar event of great ceremony and celebration.
Field Notes from the Association of Collegiate Conference and Events Directors-International (ACCED-I) By Kathleen S. Nelson, PhD, CSEP, CMP and Dan Nelson, CSEP, CMP Well, I dont know how they do it, but ACCED-I did it again: they managed to create a conference for collegiate conference and events directors that absolutely matched the needs of their target audience. As usual, the conference exceeded expectations, this time attracting a record attendance of over 500 collegiate conference events directors.
Tips and Tricks of the Masters: Experienced Event Planners Share Their Reflections on Ideas and Trends We asked experienced two event planners in nonacademic practice to give us their take on the top trends, ideas, and challenges they encounter in their day-to-day work. Some of their ideas may find a home on your campus at your next event.
Student Leaders Share Best Student Leadership Programs At our recent National Conference on Student Leadership, college students from around the country described the best student leadership programs on their campuses. Here is a sampling from their list.
Campus Ghost Stories By David Treber Every college has a ghost story or two. Such stories typically take place in the residence halls that we borrow for the summer. One summer at basketball camp, two of the younger coaches were convinced that their room was haunted. Rosa, easily my most spookable staffer, called me up one night about a ghost in Westminster Hall. I came back to campus, even though it was now 1:30 in the morning.
