Lavender GraduationWhen Ronni Sanlo, director of the LGBT Campus Resource Center at UCLA, was working at the University of Michigan in 1994, she noticed a number of special commencement events intended to celebrate the cultural backgrounds of the participants as well as their success in earning a degree. Special graduation events existed for African American students and for Latino students, among other groups, but nothing existed for the LGBT community.
